Introduction

The Cagliari Porto Canale lights are a useful small case in Sardinia’s UFO record because the most important fact is not the dramatic description, but the missing evidence. Witnesses reported two fixed red spheres followed by four or five intermittent yellow-green lights over the Porto Canale area of Cagliari on a Friday evening in November 2022. The lights were said to be low, moving one after another, and arranged in a “serpent” pattern. Attempts to photograph or film them reportedly failed because a bright harbour light overwhelmed the view.[Sardegna Live]sardegnalive.netSardegna Live Un altro avvistamento a Cagliari?“Strane luci sul porto…November 13, 2022 — 13 Nov 2022 — “Due sfere rosse seguite da quattro o cinque sfere gialloverdi luminose "che…Published: November 13, 2022Overview image for Porto Canale That leaves the case in a familiar but uncomfortable category: memorable to those who saw it, interesting to local UFO investigators, but weak as public evidence. The setting matters. Porto Canale is an industrial and maritime environment, not an empty sky over open countryside. Ships, harbour lighting, navigation lights, drones, aircraft and possible military traffic all sit close to the witness description, especially when no usable image, radar trace, official report or independent technical reconstruction has emerged.

The red and yellow-green spheres report

The public version of the Porto Canale sighting appears to have entered local circulation through the Sardinian section of the Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici, with Antoniomaria Cuccu named in local reporting as the person who relayed the account. Sardegna Live reported the case on 13 November 2022, saying that the event had taken place on the previous Friday evening at the Porto Canale of Cagliari. The description was specific enough to be memorable: two red spheres, followed by four or five luminous yellow-green intermittent spheres, apparently at low altitude and moving one behind the other.[Sardegna Live]sardegnalive.netSardegna Live Un altro avvistamento a Cagliari?“Strane luci sul porto…November 13, 2022 — 13 Nov 2022 — “Due sfere rosse seguite da quattro o cinque sfere gialloverdi luminose "che…Published: November 13, 2022

L’Unione Sarda gave a similar summary, adding the question that framed much of the later discussion: were these drones or military aircraft? It also reported the witnesses’ rejection of a helicopter explanation, on the grounds that they would have heard the characteristic noise.[L'Unione Sarda.it]unionesarda.itL'Unione Sarda.it Cagliari, segnalazione dei cacciatori di Ufo: “Strane luciL'Unione Sarda.it Cagliari, segnalazione dei cacciatori di Ufo: “Strane luci Casteddu Online carried the same core account and emphasised the witnesses’ description of the yellow-green lights as small luminous points “playing” at different heights in a snake-like formation.[Casteddu On line]castedduonline.comOpen source on castedduonline.com.

The key details are therefore:

 • Date window: Friday evening before the local reports of 13–14 November 2022.
 • Place: Cagliari’s Porto Canale, the industrial canal-port area rather than the historic passenger waterfront.
 • Claimed appearance: two fixed red lights, followed by four or five intermittent yellow-green lights.
 • Claimed movement: low altitude, one behind another, with a serpentine arrangement.
 • Evidence problem: witnesses reportedly tried to take photos and video, but the harbour light made the material unusable.[Sardegna Live]sardegnalive.netSardegna Live Un altro avvistamento a Cagliari?“Strane luci sul porto…November 13, 2022 — 13 Nov 2022 — “Due sfere rosse seguite da quattro o cinque sfere gialloverdi luminose "che…Published: November 13, 2022

This is enough to make the case worth cataloguing, but not enough to make it strong. The public record is based on repeated local-media summaries of the same witness report and investigator note. There is no publicly available original image sequence, no clear duration, no precise azimuth, no measured altitude, no confirmed number of witnesses, and no official conclusion.Porto Canale illustration 1

Why the lighthouse mattered

The most distinctive feature of the Porto Canale case is the “no-photo gap”: the witnesses were not simply without cameras; they reportedly tried to record the phenomenon, but the bright light at the port prevented a usable result. That matters because modern UFO reports are often judged by whether they survive the camera test. A vivid verbal account can sound persuasive, but once a case depends on lights in the night sky, a clear photograph or video can dramatically change the level of analysis.

Here the camera problem cuts both ways. On one hand, a bright fixed light in the foreground can genuinely spoil a night recording. Strong glare, overexposure and loss of contrast can make small lights near the horizon difficult or impossible to separate from the surrounding glow, especially on a phone camera. On the other hand, the same bright harbour environment is itself part of the explanation field. Porto Canale is not a dark rural site: it is an illuminated working port where stationary lights, moving vessels, cranes, reflections and aviation or drone activity can combine into confusing night scenes.

Cagliari’s port is a significant Mediterranean seaport, divided between the historic port and the canal port. Public port descriptions identify Porto Canale as the canal-port area with about 1,600 metres of quay and berths for transhipment and Ro-Ro traffic.[TGS 4C]tgs4c.comOpen source on tgs4c.com. The wider industrial-port setting is described by CACIP as a strategic logistics centre linked to maritime traffic between Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.[CACIP]cacip.itOpen source on cacip.it. Those facts do not “debunk” the sighting, but they do change the burden of interpretation. A light seen over a port must first be tested against port activity.

The colours also matter. Red and green are not unusual colours in maritime settings. Vessel navigation lights commonly use red and green to indicate port and starboard sides, and official boating guidance describes how these lights help observers judge a vessel’s direction at night.[NSW Government]nsw.gov.auNSW Government Identifying vessels at nightNSW Government Identifying vessels at night Other harbour and vessel lights can be white, yellow, red or green depending on purpose and viewing angle. A distant vessel, harbour vehicle, crane light, buoy, reflection or moving light seen through glare can appear as separate coloured “spheres”, particularly when the observer lacks a fixed reference point.

That does not mean the Porto Canale witnesses saw a ship. The reported “low altitude” and “different heights” push the account towards airborne explanations. But the port setting makes it unsafe to read coloured lights as inherently anomalous. In this case, the lighthouse or harbour-light problem is not a minor footnote. It is the reason the case remains a story rather than a testable visual record.

Drones and military explanations

Drones are one of the most plausible modern explanations for reports of small, coloured, intermittent lights moving at low altitude. The Porto Canale report itself raised drones as a possibility, and the described yellow-green intermittent points are compatible with how small aircraft-like lights can appear at night when seen at distance.[L'Unione Sarda.it]unionesarda.itL'Unione Sarda.it Cagliari, segnalazione dei cacciatori di Ufo: “Strane luciL'Unione Sarda.it Cagliari, segnalazione dei cacciatori di Ufo: “Strane luci Under European drone rules, night operations in the open category require a green flashing light so the aircraft remains visible; drone guidance sources discussing EASA rules note that this requirement applied from late 2021 for the open category and from July 2022 for the specific category.[EU Drone Port™]eudroneport.comEU Drone Port™Night flight with DronesEU Drone Port™Night flight with Drones

A drone explanation has strengths and weaknesses. It fits the low-altitude claim, the intermittent coloured lights, and the apparently playful changes in spacing. Several drones flying together could also create a “snake” effect if seen one behind another. The weakness is that the public reports do not identify a nearby drone operator, authorised operation, light show, port inspection, police use, private filming activity or recovered video from another viewpoint. Without that, “drones” remains a plausible explanation rather than a demonstrated one.

Military aircraft or training activity is the other explanation mentioned in local accounts. Sardinia has a long-standing military context: research on military training areas notes about 234 square kilometres of military areas on the island, roughly 60% of Italy’s surface affected by military easements, including Capo Frasca, Teulada and Salto di Quirra.[MDPI]mdpi.comOpen source on mdpi.com. The European Parliament has also recorded concerns about Sardinia’s use for land, sea and air military activities, including weapons testing.[European Parliament]europarl.europa.euOpen source on europa.eu.

For this specific case, however, the military explanation is weaker unless supported by timing, location and activity records. Porto Canale is in the Cagliari urban-port environment, not inside the better-known proving grounds. Military aircraft can be seen from many parts of southern Sardinia, and helicopters or aircraft lights can be mistaken for unusual objects, but the public evidence here does not include a matching exercise notice, flight track, radar record or official statement. The witnesses’ argument against helicopters — that they heard no typical rotor noise — is relevant, but not decisive. Distance, wind, ambient port noise and observer position can all affect whether an aircraft is heard.

Italy does have an official route for UFO-style reports. The Italian Air Force says it was designated after the 1978 wave to collect, verify and monitor reports of unidentified flying objects; citizens submit forms through the Carabinieri, after which the Air Force can begin a technical investigation into possible human or natural causes.[Aeronautica Militare]aeronautica.difesa.itAeronautica Militare OVNIAeronautica Militare OVNI No public evidence found for this Porto Canale episode shows that it entered that official process or received an Air Force assessment.Porto Canale illustration 2

What the no-photo gap does to the case

The Porto Canale sighting is not worthless because there is no image. Witness testimony can preserve useful details, especially when multiple people describe the same event independently. But the available public account does not yet reach that level. What survives is a short narrative repeated by several local outlets, apparently derived from the same UFO-investigator source. That makes the case vulnerable to duplication: three articles can make a story look well-attested even when they are repeating one underlying account.[L'Unione Sarda.it+2Casteddu On line]unionesarda.itL'Unione Sarda.it Cagliari, segnalazione dei cacciatori di Ufo: “Strane luciL'Unione Sarda.it Cagliari, segnalazione dei cacciatori di Ufo: “Strane luci

The no-photo gap creates three specific problems.

First, there is no way to measure the lights. Without images or video, readers cannot estimate angular size, apparent speed, spacing, elevation or whether the lights were truly airborne. A witness may reasonably say “low altitude”, but a light over water or an industrial horizon can be hard to place.

Second, the failed recording removes a check on colour and motion. Phone cameras often exaggerate bright points, smear motion, distort colours and create lens artefacts. That can weaken images, but images also let analysts test whether the description matches the sky geometry. Here there is no public material to inspect.

Third, the bright harbour light is both an obstacle and a clue. If glare blocked the camera, it may also have affected the witness view. A strong light source can reduce dark adaptation, wash out faint points and make moving lights appear more isolated or dramatic than they would from a darker vantage point.

This is why the Porto Canale case matters within Sardinia’s regional UFO history. It is a clean example of a common modern pattern: a striking night-light report in a technologically dense setting, publicly circulated through local media, but deprived of the very evidence that would make it testable.

How to read the case within Sardinia’s UFO history

The Porto Canale lights should be treated as a weakly evidenced, unresolved local report, not as a landmark Sardinian UFO incident. Its value lies less in proving an unknown object and more in showing how Sardinian sightings now emerge: local witnesses, social media or regional UFO networks, quick pickup by local newspapers, and then a public record that may be too thin for firm judgement.

It also belongs to a wider Cagliari-area pattern in which port, coastal and urban-sky sightings compete with ordinary explanations. The Casteddu Online UFO tag page, for example, places the Porto Canale story alongside other Sardinian reports involving coloured lights, fast green lights, and luminous objects near other local landmarks.[Casteddu On line]castedduonline.itOpen source on castedduonline.it. That continuity is useful for regional mapping, but it can also create a misleading impression of accumulation. Many weak reports do not automatically add up to one strong case.

A balanced reading is therefore:

 • Unresolved in the narrow sense: no public source identifies exactly what the witnesses saw.
 • Weak as evidence: no usable photo, video, instrument record, official assessment or detailed witness file is publicly available.
 • Plausibly conventional: drones, maritime lights, port activity, aircraft or mixed optical effects remain credible possibilities.
 • Regionally useful: the case illustrates how Cagliari’s port environment complicates UFO interpretation more than an isolated rural sky would.

The most honest conclusion is that the Porto Canale lights remain an interesting report with a built-in evidence failure. The witnesses may have seen something genuinely unusual to them, but the public record does not support a stronger claim. In Sardinia’s UFO history, the case is best remembered as the Cagliari lights that escaped the camera — and as a reminder that the absence of a usable image can be the central fact, not a minor inconvenience.Porto Canale illustration 3

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to The Cagliari Lights That Escaped the Camera.
