Introduction
Southern Sardinia’s 2022 UFO flap was not a single spectacular encounter but a short, busy run of local reports concentrated between late February and mid-March 2022, especially around Monastir, Assemini, San Sperate, Ussana, Decimomannu and the wider Cagliari area. The most repeated descriptions involved luminous circles, green or blue-green lights, triangular arrangements, low-altitude lights, and objects seen near or alongside aircraft-like noise. That matters because it shows how a modern regional UFO story forms: witnesses report unusual lights, local media amplify the pattern, investigators collect accounts, and only afterwards do drones, helicopters, military routes, satellites, camera artefacts and genuinely unclear cases get separated.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
The best reading is cautious. The flap produced several clustered testimonies and some photographs or videos, but not the kind of independently verified radar, flight-log or multi-camera evidence that would make it a strong extraordinary case. Its value in Sardinian UFO history is different: it is a useful case study in how repeated reports in a military and aviation-rich part of the island can create a compelling local narrative before the evidential sorting is complete. Italy’s Air Force remains the official body for OVNI reports, collecting them through the Carabinieri and checking for human or natural explanations before classifying anything as unidentified.[Aeronautica Militare]aeronautica.difesa.itAeronautica Militare OVNIAeronautica Militare OVNI
Why did reports cluster in southern Sardinia?
The 2022 wave centred on a relatively small part of southern Sardinia, not the whole island. The cases listed by the Italian Centre for UFO Studies, CISU, begin with Monastir on 22 February 2022, continue through Sant’Andrea Frius, Assemini, San Sperate, Decimoputzu, Donori, Ussana, Serdiana, Uta, Cagliari, San Basilio and Maracalagonis, and end in the public CISU summary with Monastir again on 10 March. That geography is important: many reports came from roads, terraces and cars in the Cagliari hinterland, where witnesses were looking across open sky towards Elmas, Decimomannu, Macchiareddu or other familiar local reference points.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
The timing also shaped the story. Most of the stronger reports occurred in early evening, around 19:00 to 21:30, when artificial lights are prominent, aircraft are visible against a darkening sky, and witnesses are often driving or outside for short periods. CISU’s list includes a 19:09 sighting near Pixinortu, a 20:10 case on the SS130dir near San Sperate, a simultaneous 20:00 report on the Decimoputzu-Decimomannu road, a 21:35 triangular-light report at Assemini, and a 20:00 Serdiana report the following evening.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
That does not make the witnesses unreliable. It means the conditions were exactly the kind in which a flap can emerge: several people in nearby towns see lights within a short date range; some reports resemble one another; local television and newspaper coverage tells residents that others are seeing things too; and new witnesses become more likely to report what they might otherwise have dismissed. L’Unione Sarda reported on 21 March 2022 that numerous testimonies had reached the Planetarium of L’Unione Sarda and that sightings of objects not recognised as aircraft or helicopters had increased, particularly in the south of the island.[L'Unione Sarda.it]unionesarda.itOpen source on unionesarda.it.
Monastir, Assemini and nearby reports
The Monastir reports gave the flap much of its shape. On 22 February 2022, two sisters reportedly heard helicopters near their home, went outside and saw two of them. About twenty minutes later, after hearing a similar rumble, they observed what was described as a flat circle in the sky edged with a flashing green light. One witness said it appeared to be followed by a helicopter with a flashing white light, moving towards the Elmas or Decimomannu direction; the younger sister managed to record video.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
This first account already contains the central ambiguity of the flap. The object was described as unusual, circular and green-lit, yet the same testimony also placed it in a context of helicopter-like sound and other aircraft. That makes it hard to treat as a clean “unknown” without flight data, sound recording, distance estimates, and confirmation from other observers at known locations.
Assemini added another strand. On 26 February at 20:28, a father reportedly sent CISU a photograph taken by his son of an object resembling another sighting from Li Punti near Sassari, described as jellyfish-like. On 2 March at 21:35, witnesses in Assemini reported three luminous sources arranged like an isosceles triangle. These details are suggestive, but they are also thin: a single photograph without clear distance, scale and exposure data can be difficult to interpret, and three lights in a triangular arrangement may represent one object, several aircraft, drones, reflections, or unrelated lights seen together.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
How local investigators gathered accounts
CISU’s public role in the 2022 flap was to collect, arrange and compare witness statements rather than to declare the case solved. Its 26 March 2022 summary named Antonio Maria Cuccu and Matteo Marrocu as members investigating the cases, and it presented a chronological list with times, locations, witness descriptions, photographs, drawings and preliminary comments.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
That approach matters because many UFO flaps become less useful when they are reduced to viral clips or second-hand claims. CISU’s list preserved the basic evidential variables a later researcher would need: exact date, approximate time, location, direction of movement, colour, shape, duration, whether there was sound, whether witnesses were in a car, whether images existed, and whether aircraft or helicopters were heard or seen nearby. It did not turn those variables into certainty. In fact, CISU explicitly stated that it was not always easy to explain the sightings from drawings and testimony, partly because all details were not yet available.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
Local media then gave the story public visibility. Videolina aired a 21 March 2022 segment under the question of whether the sightings were UFOs or drones, using the phrase “orange code” for the increase in reports. L’Unione Sarda, from the same media group, reported that many accounts had reached its planetarium, including luminous moving objects and a triangular luminous shape that was later classified as a drone after the witness was advised to photograph it.[Videolina]videolina.itUFO O DRONI? BOOM DI AVVISTAMENTI NEI CIELI DELL'ISOLA: «CODICE ARANCIONE»UFO O DRONI? BOOM DI AVVISTAMENTI NEI CIELI DELL'ISOLA: «CODICE ARANCIONE»
That drone identification is one of the flap’s most important details. It shows that local investigators and science communicators were not treating every report as mysterious. It also shows why early flap narratives are unstable: one striking case can become ordinary once a clearer image is obtained, while other reports remain unresolved simply because the evidence is weaker, not necessarily because the object was more exotic.[L'Unione Sarda.it]unionesarda.itOpen source on unionesarda.it.
Drones, helicopters and unresolved sightings
The main conventional explanations for the 2022 southern Sardinia reports fall into three overlapping groups: drones, helicopters or aircraft, and distant or high-altitude lights such as satellites. None explains every entry automatically, but each fits part of the pattern.
Drones are especially relevant because the flap repeatedly involved green or blue-green lights, low apparent altitude, hovering or slow movement, and shapes inferred from lights rather than from a clearly visible solid body. European drone rules also make green lights a normal part of night operations: EASA guidance says drones intended for open-category night operations are to be equipped with a green flashing light, and specific-category operators were required to use drones with a green flashing light for night operations below 120 metres from December 2021.[EASA]easa.europa.euOpen source on europa.eu.
Helicopters and military aircraft are just as important in this part of Sardinia. Several reports themselves mention helicopter-like noise, helicopters following or preceding the object, or movement towards Elmas, Macchiareddu or Decimomannu. The Air Force has described Decimomannu as a base involved in search-and-rescue helicopter activity, including cooperation with the Coast Guard’s AW139 helicopter and the 80th Combat Search and Rescue Centre.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
The wider Decimomannu context also raises the bar for interpretation. The Air Force says the Reparto Sperimentale e di Standardizzazione Tiro Aereo at Decimomannu coordinates, manages and controls flight activity for Italian Air Force units, other armed forces and allied countries, with Capo Frasca among the dependent facilities. In plain terms, southern Sardinia is not a quiet empty sky: training, support, helicopters, military routes and controlled airspace are part of the local background.[Aeronautica Militare]aeronautica.difesa.itOpen source on difesa.it.
Satellites and other astronomical explanations are less obviously central to the strongest 2022 reports, because many witnesses described low-altitude or aircraft-like features rather than high, silent, straight-line “trains”. Still, they matter when assessing any modern UFO flap. CUN’s national 2021 statistics, reported by ANSA and Sardinian media, found that 30% of analysed Italian UFO reports that year involved Starlink satellites, with aircraft or helicopters, drones, Chinese lanterns, balloons, flares, planets and meteors also appearing among common explanations.[ANSA.it]ansa.itufo cun 276 avvistamenti nel 2021 in calo f65ad630 a41a 4d6e 95d5 3801e410022cufo cun 276 avvistamenti nel 2021 in calo f65ad630 a41a 4d6e 95d5 3801e410022c
The remaining category is “unresolved”, but that word should be used carefully. A case can remain unresolved because it is genuinely puzzling, because records are missing, because witness direction estimates are imprecise, because the image is too poor, or because no one has matched the time to flight, drone, satellite or military activity data. The 2022 flap contains unresolved reports, but unresolved does not mean confirmed extraordinary craft.
What the green-ring pattern really tells us
The repeated blue-green or green-ring motif is the most memorable feature of the southern Sardinia flap. CISU noted that several cases seemed similar and that the luminous ring between blue and green recalled other reports from previous months. It also mentioned similarities with cases near military air routes and cases with little or no sound, leading investigators to suspect that an aircraft such as an NH90 helicopter could be involved in at least some reports.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
This is a good example of evidence pointing in two directions at once. On the one hand, repeated details across separate witnesses are exactly what investigators look for when deciding whether a cluster is more than random noise. On the other hand, repeated details can also arise when several people are seeing the same type of ordinary object from different angles, or when a publicised description influences later reporting. A green-lit object in a drone-rich and helicopter-active environment is not automatically anomalous.
The Serdiana report from 4 March illustrates the problem. A man reportedly went to the window after hearing a strong helicopter-like noise and saw, towards Ussana, a circular green light followed by two white lights. He managed to take a photograph. That is a potentially useful report because it includes sound, direction, colour and an image; it is also a report whose own details keep aircraft or drone explanations in play.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
The Donori-Ussana report from 3 March has a similar tension. Motorists saw four small red lights in the distance; as the first passed very low over them, they described a disc with a light underside and a fluorescent green light around the circumference, accompanied by a noise like helicopters. The close-pass element makes it vivid, but the helicopter-like noise prevents it from being a clean silent-disc case.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
The Cagliari port-channel sequel
The March flap was not the only southern Sardinian UFO story of 2022. In November, L’Unione Sarda reported another CISU-linked account from Cagliari’s port channel: two red spheres followed by four or five flashing yellow-green lights, described as moving in a “snake-like” arrangement. The report raised drones or military vehicles as possible explanations, while witnesses reportedly excluded helicopters because they believed they would have heard them.[L'Unione Sarda.it]unionesarda.itOpen source on unionesarda.it.
This later case belongs beside the March flap rather than inside it. It shows that the 2022 southern Sardinian pattern was not only a ten-day burst of reports, but part of a wider local habit of noticing and reporting unusual lights in the Cagliari area. It also repeats the same evidential weakness: witnesses tried to photograph and film the phenomenon, but a bright port light prevented useful proof from being captured.[L'Unione Sarda.it]unionesarda.itOpen source on unionesarda.it.
The port-channel case is useful for another reason. Ports, industrial areas and coastal infrastructure are visually complicated at night. Moving lights may be aircraft, drones, reflections, harbour activity, vessels, security lighting, distant road traffic or optical effects. That does not dismiss the witness experience; it simply means a sighting in that environment needs stronger documentation than a verbal description alone.
Did later reporting strengthen or weaken the flap?
Later reporting mostly weakened the most dramatic reading of the 2022 flap, while preserving it as a noteworthy local cluster. The strongest public sources did not produce a later official confirmation, radar match, military acknowledgement of unknown traffic, or clear multi-angle footage. Instead, the public record shows a mixture of collected testimony, local media attention, one reported drone classification after photography, and investigator caution about incomplete details.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla SardegnaCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ondata di avvistamenti sulla Sardegna
This is not a failure of the story. It is what a responsible regional UFO case often looks like after the excitement fades. The first public phase asks, “Why are so many people seeing strange lights?” The later assessment asks, “Which reports survive ordinary checks?” In southern Sardinia, several reports remain interesting because they are clustered, repeated, and locally specific. But the evidence does not justify treating the flap as proof of non-human craft.
The official Italian framework also supports this cautious reading. The Air Force’s OVNI process is explicitly designed to check whether a report correlates with human events or natural phenomena, and only after those checks does an event remain classified as an unidentified flying object. There is no public indication in the sources reviewed here that the March 2022 southern Sardinia cluster became a landmark official unknown comparable to a major aviation case.[Aeronautica Militare]aeronautica.difesa.itAeronautica Militare OVNIAeronautica Militare OVNI
Within Sardinia’s UFO history, the 2022 flap therefore matters less as a solved mystery than as a modern witness-cluster case. It shows how quickly a local pattern can form, how useful careful chronology can be, how easily green lights and aircraft noise complicate interpretation, and why the island’s military and aviation setting must always be part of the analysis. It is a good page in the Sardinian record precisely because it resists a simple ending: some reports look likely to be drones or aircraft, some are too weak to judge, and a few remain open only in the modest sense that the available public evidence is not enough to identify them.
