Introduction

The alleged 1933 Magenta crash is Lombardy’s most famous UFO legend, but it is not a verified historical event. The story says that an unknown craft came down near Magenta, west of Milan, that Benito Mussolini’s regime recovered it, and that a secret study group examined it before the object was later taken by the United States near the end of the Second World War. The problem is that the case rests mainly on anonymously supplied papers, later retellings, and modern whistleblower claims rather than a secure archive trail, physical debris, named first-hand witnesses, or matching official records.[theblackvault.com+2New York Post]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiOverview image for Magenta Claim That makes Magenta important, but not because it proves an alien crash. It matters because it shows how Lombardy became attached to global crash-retrieval lore: a local place name, a Fascist-era setting, famous figures such as Mussolini and Guglielmo Marconi, and a dramatic “before Roswell” date combined into a story that is memorable, repeatable and difficult to verify. For a careful reader, the best question is not “was it definitely fake?” but “what would the evidence need to show, and does it show it?” At present, the answer is that the evidence remains weak.

What the Magenta story claims

The core version now circulating in UFO literature begins with Italian ufologist Roberto Pinotti and his colleague Alfredo Lissoni. Pinotti says that, starting in 1996, he received anonymous material concerning so-called Fascist UFO files. In the English-language account reproduced by The Black Vault, the alleged incident is described as a flying saucer that “crashed or landed” near Magenta in Lombardy in 1933, followed by an investigation by an obscure body called the RS/33 Cabinet, supposedly authorised by Mussolini.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

The details are not fully stable across retellings. Some versions give 11 April 1933 as the date; others emphasise 13 June 1933, when telegrams and secrecy orders are said to have been issued. Pinotti’s account says the object was later stored at SIAI Marchetti hangars in Vergiate, north-west of Milan, and that Mussolini initially suspected a secret weapon from another European power while Marconi supposedly considered an extraterrestrial origin.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

This is why the case sits so naturally inside Lombardy’s UFO history. The alleged geography is regional: Magenta, Milan, Vergiate and the wider industrial-aircraft belt of north-west Lombardy. The alleged politics are national: Fascist secrecy, wartime intelligence and high-level state control. The alleged significance is international: if true, the story would pre-date Roswell by fourteen years and move the first famous crash-retrieval claim from New Mexico to Lombardy.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

The story usually includes four main claims:

 • A craft came down near Magenta in 1933. The object is described in later accounts as an unconventional aircraft, disc, saucer or bell-like craft.
 • Mussolini’s regime imposed secrecy. The alleged telegrams refer to silence about an unknown aircraft on Italian soil.
 • A study group called RS/33 examined the matter. The group is said to have included major Fascist figures and to have been headed by Marconi.
 • The object was eventually linked to the United States. Modern versions often say the craft was retrieved by the US around 1944 or 1945, sometimes with Vatican involvement.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

The first three claims come mainly from the Pinotti-Lissoni file tradition. The fourth became much more visible after former US intelligence official David Grusch publicly referred to an alleged 1933 recovery in Magenta and a later US acquisition. Reporting on those claims noted that Grusch did not provide public evidence for the Magenta allegation.[New York Post]nypost.compentagon whistleblower claims vatican helped us retrive ufo from mussolinipentagon whistleblower claims vatican helped us retrive ufo from mussoliniMagenta Claim illustration 1

Why the evidence is contested

The Magenta story has the shape of a documentary case, but its evidential foundation is fragile. The documents were not discovered in a clearly recorded state archive with a transparent catalogue reference. They were reportedly sent anonymously, in batches, to UFO researchers. That immediately creates a chain-of-custody problem: even if some paper, ink, style or wording looks plausible for the 1930s, that does not by itself prove that the documents are genuine official records of a crash.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

Chain of custody matters because extraordinary claims need more than period-looking paperwork. A strong historical case would normally have multiple independent anchors: a traceable archive file, accession details, official correspondence in more than one repository, press suppression records, named officials’ diaries, military logistics records, photographs, material samples, or first-hand testimony that can be checked against documents. Magenta has not publicly produced that kind of converging evidence.

The official record does not support a confirmed crash

Italy does have an official framework for modern UFO reports, but that framework does not rescue the Magenta claim. The Italian Air Force states that, after the 1978 wave of sightings, it was designated as the institutional body responsible for collecting, checking and monitoring UFO reports. Its process sends witness forms through the Carabinieri and then checks whether events can be linked to human activity or natural phenomena; only when no technical or natural explanation is found is an event classified as an unidentified flying object.[Aeronautica Militare]aeronautica.difesa.itAeronautica Militare OVNIAeronautica Militare OVNI

That official procedure is useful because it shows what a public institutional UFO record looks like: a defined reporting route, a responsible office, technical checks and published case lists. The Magenta story is different. It is a claimed secret pre-war recovery, not a case appearing in a transparent official register. The absence of a public official file does not automatically disprove a secret operation, but it means the burden falls heavily on the alleged leaked documents and later testimony.

The US government’s 2024 AARO historical report also weakens the modern crash-retrieval frame around Magenta. AARO said it found no empirical evidence that the US government or private companies had reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology, and Reuters reported the same central conclusion: US investigations since the Second World War had found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology, while many sightings were misidentified ordinary objects or phenomena.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govU.S. Department of War AARO Historical Record Report Volume 1U.S. Department of War AARO Historical Record Report Volume 1(https://media.defense.gov/2024/Mar/08/2003409233/-1/-1/0/DOPSR-2024-0263-AARO-HISTORICAL-RECORD-REPORT-VOLUME-1-2024.PDF)

AARO’s report does not specifically settle what happened in a Lombard field in 1933. It does, however, matter for the later claim that the United States recovered or inherited an alien craft from Fascist Italy. If that later claim were true, it would sit inside exactly the kind of long-running US crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering history that AARO says it did not substantiate.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govU.S. Department of War AARO Historical Record Report Volume 1U.S. Department of War AARO Historical Record Report Volume 1(https://media.defense.gov/2024/Mar/08/2003409233/-1/-1/0/DOPSR-2024-0263-AARO-HISTORICAL-RECORD-REPORT-VOLUME-1-2024.PDF)Magenta Claim illustration 2

Famous names make the story memorable, not proven

One reason the Magenta legend has lasted is that it attaches itself to recognisable names. Mussolini provides the secrecy and authoritarian setting. Marconi provides scientific prestige. SIAI Marchetti and Vergiate provide an aviation-industrial location that feels plausible for hidden storage. These names make the story vivid, but vividness is not verification.

Marconi is especially important to the legend. He was a real scientific giant, and the Nobel Prize biography records that he died in Rome on 20 July 1937. That means he was alive during the alleged 1933 period, so his inclusion is not impossible on chronological grounds. But “possible” is a low bar. A credible historical claim would need independent evidence that Marconi actually headed or advised such a group, not just a document set of disputed origin saying so.[NobelPrize.org]nobelprize.orgNobel Prize.org Guglielmo Marconi – BiographicalNobel Prize.org Guglielmo Marconi – Biographical

The SIAI Marchetti link works in a similar way. Lombardy and nearby northern Italian aircraft facilities were real and historically important. Pinotti’s account places the alleged recovered object in hangars at Vergiate, which gives the story a concrete regional setting rather than a vague “secret base”.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

But a plausible storage site is not evidence of stored alien technology. Aircraft factories, military hangars and restricted industrial sites are exactly the places where rumours can become durable because they are both real and inaccessible. A reader should separate three questions: did such facilities exist, did Fascist Italy have an interest in advanced aviation, and did a non-human craft sit in one of those hangars? The first two are ordinary history. The third remains unproven.

How the legend spread internationally

For many years, Magenta was mainly a specialist Italian UFO story. It entered wider English-language UFO discussion through translated and republished accounts of Pinotti’s work, including material reproduced by The Black Vault from UFO Contacts in Italy Volume Two. That gave English-speaking readers a more detailed version of the claim: the anonymous documents, the RS/33 Cabinet, the supposed Magenta recovery and the Vergiate storage story.[theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti

The story then gained a second life after David Grusch’s 2023 allegations about non-human craft recovery programmes. Media attention to Grusch focused heavily on the broader claim that the US possessed recovered craft, but the Magenta detail gave the story an older and more international flavour. Some reporting said Grusch claimed the 1933 Magenta recovery was the first European recovery and that the US later obtained the craft; the same reporting also noted that he provided no public evidence for that specific claim.[New York Post]nypost.compentagon whistleblower claims vatican helped us retrive ufo from mussolinipentagon whistleblower claims vatican helped us retrive ufo from mussolini

The wider media environment is important here. Vanity Fair reported that major outlets had reservations about publishing the original Grusch story and highlighted the absence of public documents, photographs or first-hand physical evidence. That does not prove Grusch was wrong, but it explains why the Magenta claim remains in the category of allegation rather than established history.[Vanity Fair]vanityfair.comOpen source on vanityfair.com.

Once a story has both a local origin and a modern whistleblower echo, it becomes highly shareable. Magenta now functions in UFO culture as a bridge between Italian Fascist-era mystery, Roswell-style crash retrieval, Vatican secrecy claims and contemporary US disclosure debates. That is exactly why it needs careful handling: each new layer can make the legend feel better corroborated, even when the layers are repeating or amplifying earlier weak material rather than independently confirming it.Magenta Claim illustration 3

What would make Magenta stronger

The Magenta claim would become much stronger if researchers could produce evidence that does not depend on anonymous delivery or circular retelling. The most valuable evidence would be boring in the best possible way: archive references, file numbers, cross-matched documents, transport records, photographs with provenance, named witnesses, and independent records from institutions that had no reason to copy one another.

Useful evidence would include:

 • A traceable official file from Italian state, military, police or prefecture archives, with catalogue data showing when and where it was held.
 • Independent references to the same event in separate archives, such as local administration, military logistics, intelligence correspondence or diplomatic reporting.
 • Contemporary local press traces, including sudden gaps, censorship notices or indirect reporting around Magenta, Milan, Vergiate or Varese.
 • Material evidence, if any object is claimed to survive, tested by independent laboratories with clear custody and ordinary peer scrutiny.
 • First-hand testimony, not just descendants’ memories or second-hand accounts, with names, dates and checkable biographical details.

Without that, the story remains historically interesting but evidentially weak. It is not enough for a document to look old, for a location to be plausible, or for a later official to say he heard or saw classified claims. Those things may justify further research, but they do not establish a crash.

Why the case still matters in Lombardy UFO history

Magenta is not Lombardy’s strongest UFO evidence, but it may be its most culturally powerful UFO story. It places the region inside one of the biggest themes in modern UFO belief: the idea that governments have secretly recovered craft and hidden the truth for decades. In that sense, the case is less like a normal sighting report and more like a foundation myth.

For Lombardy, the story also shows a recurring tension in UFO history. The region has real aviation density, real military and industrial connections, and real official procedures for later UFO reporting. Those facts make the skies and institutions of Lombardy worth studying. But they do not automatically validate the most dramatic claim attached to the region. A careful regional history has to hold both points together: Lombardy is a serious UFO-reporting landscape, and the Magenta crash legend is still not a proven event.

The fairest assessment is therefore cautious. The Magenta story should be described as an alleged crash-retrieval legend centred on Lombardy, supported mainly by disputed documents and later claims. It should not be presented as a confirmed UFO crash, a proven Fascist recovery programme, or verified evidence of extraterrestrial technology. Its value lies in what it reveals about evidence, secrecy, repetition and belief: a weakly sourced local claim can become globally famous when it connects to the right names, places and expectations.

Amazon book picks

Further Reading

Books and field guides related to Did a UFO Really Crash Near Magenta?.
